Water heater size for a family of 5

What is the correct size waterheater I have a 40 gallon for a family of 5 too small.

The typical family of 5 requires at least 12-15 gallons of water per day per person. Your current water heater needs to be replaced with an 80 gallon especially if you use a lot of hot water and have pet laundry to do in addition to your family’s laundry. Hope this helps.
